What Is a Part 15 AM Station?
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) permits certain low-power radio transmitters to operate without a license under 47 C.F.R. Part 15 of the Code of Federal Regulations. These devices are called "intentional radiators" and must comply with strict field-strength and antenna-length limits that naturally restrict coverage to an extremely local area — typically a building, property, or immediate neighborhood.
Thames Valley Radio broadcasts on 980 kHz AM as a Part 15 low-power AM station, operating under the authority of 47 C.F.R. § 15.219 (Operation in the AM broadcast band). A supplemental FM rebroadcast on 99.5 MHz is conducted under 47 C.F.R. § 15.239 (Operation in the FM broadcast band).
Part 15 stations receive no interference protection from the FCC — licensed stations always have priority. Part 15 stations must accept any interference received and must not cause harmful interference to any licensed radio service. Our station is operated in good faith compliance with these requirements at all times.
